The Edensfield Health Intiative - Projects

Cancer / Health Awareness

Edensfield Health Initiative has been involved in the dissemination of information with regard to the various cancers, particularly breast, cervical, and prostrate cancers. To this end, we have organized health talks with relevant specialists in order to educate members of the population on the necessity for a preventive approach to these conditions. They have been taught regular self examination techniques that are crucial to earlier detection of breast cancer. Mass cervical cytological examinations have been carried out and the importance of early presentation when unusual cervical bleeding or other signs are noted have been emphasized. We have been involved in the support and care of patients with pancreatic, rectal, and colonic cancers.

As as result of our affiliation with Lydia Grace Foundation, a rehabilitation organisation for commercial sex workers, we have organised various seminars / interactive sessions on HIV/AIDS in order to ensure that the wider populace is aware of the very real threat posed by this condition. We promote voluntary counseling and testing and ensure that treatment at government hospitals, emphasizing the importance of 100% compliance with prescribed treatment.

The Edensfield Clinic based within the Christchurch grounds, started operations in July 2006. We have treated just over 400 patients as at September 2008. We have a considerable number of patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension requiring continual care. In these cases, the emphasis, apart from treatment, is teaching patients to understand the condition as well as how to manage and live with it successfully.
